Team Selection
All travel tryouts are a two-day closed tryout (no parents, siblings, or
friends allowed). Attendance on both days is highly recommended,
but not mandatory. Individuals who have submitted an application to
coach are allowed to watch evaluations but are not allowed to
communicate with the evaluators or players.
The SLSL Basketball program directors will select evaluators
to run the travel tryouts. The goal is to select persons knowledgeable
about basketball and what is required in forming a "team" that is
separate and independent from SLSL. These persons must not have children in
the age group being evaluated, and ideally, will not be parents in the district.
The evaluators will run the tryouts, which will be a mix of drills and
scrimmages. They will:
- Rank the kids by basketball skill level, not by positions.
- Select a minimum of one-half of the team based on their rankings.
- Give their team roster and the rest of the rankings to the Head
Coach who will select (with Director approval) the players that
will comprise the remainder of the roster.
- Provide individual evaluations of the tryout attendees upon request.
Coach Selection
The Basketball Directors will select the Head Coach for a team from the team's available parents that submitted an application to coach. Download application.
Spring Lake Sports League is taking a proactive role in making sure
that our kids are safe. Coaches will be required to sign a copy of the SLSL Kid Safe Volunteer Disclosure Statement. The form is good for one year and covers all three sports. Coaching candidates may print our Volunteer Disclosure Form from the link below. This Volunteer Disclosure Form must be on file in order to act as a coach, assistant coach, commissioner or assistant commissioner. This form must be renewed annually. Click here for the Volunteer Disclosure Form
The Head Coach will be notified and given the opportunity to select a portion of the roster based on the evaluator rankings and subject to Director approval. (This means that the coach can base his/her decisions somewhat on tryouts and previous experience with this age group as opposed to the pure rankings.) There will be a minimum of
10-12 players per team. This number can be changed with Director approval in order to have sufficient numbers for a "B" team.
The Head Coach submits to the Basketball Directors the names of proposed assistant coaches for approval.
Team Notification
Team rosters will be placed on this site under "Tryout Results" shortly after the tryouts. The players will be listed in no specific order.
Playing Time and Practices
The league regulates playing time. Every player that is dressed and eligible to play in the game must play in the game. It is recommended that each player play at least one quarter, but not required. Please
note that this is a travel league and playing time is at the
coach's discretion. Play time may differ from regular season games to tournament games.
Teams will practice twice a week at one of the District 103 gyms, or at
a gym that we have reserved in Buffalo Grove. Practice times will be determined once the teams have been selected. Jeff Pagliocca of Evolution Athletics will act as the Director of Training and assist with instruction in a number of practices for each grade.
It is highly recommended that travel players play in the house league.
League
We will have teams for boys and girls at each level for 4th, 5th, and 6th grades. The number of teams will be based on the number and ability level of those trying out as well as the availability of coaches. We will participate in The North Suburban Basketball League. The one exception is the 4th grade girls team who may play in the NSBL or choose to participate in the Niles League.
Parent Meeting
We will have a meeting to talk about the upcoming season in the
Daniel Wright Cafeteria on September 8, 2010 at 7:00 pm.
In the meantime, if you have any questions or concerns
please contact Mike Horton, Director of Travel Basketball,
at 847-940-1510 or mike@slsl.net.
