Basketball Rules and Regulations Synopsis

Playing Time
  • 2nd Grade sit out strongest player in 2nd period or 1st substitution opportunity (which ever comes first).

  • Each player cannot sit out for 2 substitution periods in a row.

  • Equal playing time is required.

  • 1st grade 3 on 3.

  • 2nd grade 4 on 4 (unless league designated 5 on 5 play).


  • Sit out 2 strongest players in 2nd period

  • Each player cannot sit out for 2 full periods in a row

  • If 8 players - each plays 2.5 periods.

  • If 7 players - 5 play 3 periods, 2 play 2.5

  • If 6 players - 2 play 3 periods, 4 play 2.5

  • Each player cannot sit out for 2 full periods in a row

  • If 9 players - 4 play 2.5 periods, 5 play 2

  • If 8 players - each plays 2.5 periods.

  • If 7 players - 5 play 3 periods, 2 play 2.5

  • If 6 players - 2 play 3 periods, 4 play 2.5

  • Each player cannot sit out for 2 full periods in a row

  • If 9 players - 4 play 2.5 periods, 5 play 2

  • If 8 players - each plays 2.5 periods.

  • If 7 players - 5 play 3 periods, 2 play 2.5

  • If 6 players - 2 play 3 periods, 4 play 2.5

Pressing Rule
  • No full court press

  • Team must fall back and defend no higher than top of key on any inbounds

  • Once across the plain, can press beyond top of key



  • No full court press

  • Team must fall back and defend no higher than top of key on any inbounds for 3rd and 1/2 court for 4th

  • Once across the plain, can press beyond top of key

  • Full court press allowed in 4th quarter

  • No team may press if their lead is 10 points or more

Defense
  • Only man to man

  • No double teams

  • Double teams are not illegal inside the paint or if an offensive player brings defender to the ball

  • Wrist bands used

  • Team must set-up up defense at the free throw line and defend no higher than the top of the key

  • 1st grade use a a halo rule, defender cannot steal the ball unless offensive player loses control of it

  • Only man to man

  • No double teams

  • Double teams are not illegal inside the paint or if an offensive player brings defender to the ball

  • Wrist bands used in 3rd

  • Man to man only in quarters 1-3; Zone allowed in 4th quarter

  • Double and triple teaming is discouraged, team play should be emphasized


  • All defenses allowed

Clock Times
  • 1st Grade - 4 nine minute periods, continuous clock

Offensive

Tie Games
  • 1st Grade - no scores kept, always a tie

  • 2nd Grade - no scores kept, always a tie
  • No overtime, games can end in a tie
  • Tied games can go into overtime period equal to 1/2 the normal time for the quarter (3 minutes)

  • No overtime will be allowed if the allotted time for the game has expired

Three Point Shot       Allowed in this level only
Point Guard Play
  • Point guard play must be rotated each 4 minutes to a new player, so in each game as equal opportunity is provided as possible to all kids. Required on made baskets and inbounds plays in backcourt, only. (Rotation must be provided to opposing coach prior to game)

Picking
  • 1st grade - Picking is not allowed.

  • 2nd grade - No "ball" picks are allowed, only picks away from the ball.

  • 3rd grade -- No "ball" picks are allowed, during the 1st and 3rd quarters only. "Ball" picks can be used during 2nd and 4th quarter.

  • 4th grade -- All picks can be used.
